The Matys Quartet was founded in 1997 at the Brno Conservatory under prof. Rudolf Stastny's leadership. Artistic growth of this young ensemble was enriched by the former member of the Janacek Quartet prof. Adolf Sykora and during summer Masterclasses by prof. Antonin Moravec held in Pommersfelden (Germany). In 1999 the Quartet started collaboration with the Artemis Quartet.

In 2003 the Quartet addressed Jiri Matys whose works they successfully performed to provide his name to this group. The final cast of the ensamble was completed by a new violist David Slechta who joined in 2009. In addition to interpretation  of the works of J. Matys the Quartet devots to performing works of contemporary composers.
